Project Overview
SE Group serves as the Structural Engineer of Record for Livingstone College’s multi-phase campus modernization program encompassing academic, residential, and dining facilities across the historic Salisbury campus.
The program includes structural condition assessments, rehabilitation design, accessibility upgrades, and adaptive reuse strategies across six campus buildings totaling approximately 110,000 square feet. Work was delivered in phased construction to allow buildings to remain operational during renovation.
A central component of the effort involved detailed structural evaluations to document existing conditions, identify deterioration, and confirm load capacity prior to implementing new programmatic uses and accessibility improvements.
Scope of Structural Engineering
SE Group’s work spans both assessment and design, supporting renovations and adaptive reuse across several key campus facilities:
Harris Hall – Residence Hall Renovation (21,053 SF)
Structural assessment of existing masonry and floor framing systems, followed by design of a new elevator pit, exterior accessibility ramp, and a 4,337 SF radial café addition with cantilevered steel canopy framing. Structural modifications required selective foundation work and coordination with new architectural program spaces.
Dancy Hall – Residential Building Renovation (32,782 SF)
Structural reinforcement of roof and floor framing systems to accommodate new building systems and circulation elements. Work included support for multiple traction elevators, ADA accessibility upgrades, and coordination with new mechanical layouts.
Aggrey Dining Hall Expansion
Evaluation of existing foundation and roof framing systems to support a 15,396 SF renovation and 8,398 SF expansion. Structural scope included new foundations, loading dock framing, service ramps, and interior framing for commercial kitchen upgrades.
Tucker Hall – Structural Rehabilitation
Comprehensive review of the existing framing system followed by targeted reinforcement to support elevator integration and updated accessibility circulation routes.
Hotel Salisbury – Wing C Adaptive Reuse
Structural analysis of existing slab and roof framing systems for conversion of a historic hotel structure into modern student housing. Work included structural repair drawings for stair and breezeway systems and evaluation of the existing concrete structure.
J.W. Hood Building
Evaluation of exterior stairs and breezeways to assess corrosion and fatigue conditions, followed by reinforcement strategies to improve long-term structural stability and safety.
